What Employers Think

Digital literacy is no longer a specialist skill, it is as fundamental to employment as numeracy and literacy. The UK House of Lords has stated that digital skills should be treated with the same importance as reading and writing. In New Zealand, the Hays 2025 Skills Report confirms that digital skills are now nearly universal requirements across all sectors and skill levels, from office support and accounting to logistics, marketing, and the trades.

82% of middle-skill jobs require digital literacy as a baseline. Employers need confidence that candidates can use computers, navigate the internet, manage files, use productivity software, communicate online, and do so safely and securely. IC3 Digital Literacy certification provides exactly that proof, a globally recognised, performance-based credential that validates a candidate is ready to function in a technology-based workplace.

Salaries & Promotion

IC3 Digital Literacy does not target a single high-paying role, it raises the floor for every role. A candidate who cannot demonstrate basic digital competence is excluded from the vast majority of jobs advertised in New Zealand today. A candidate who can prove digital literacy through IC3 certification removes that barrier entirely.

In practical terms, digital literacy certification supports access to roles across every salary band, from administration and customer service (NZ$45,000–$60,000) to office management and coordination roles (NZ$55,000–$75,000) to technical and trade roles where digital documentation, scheduling, and compliance systems are now standard.

For career changers, refugees, older workers returning to employment, and school leavers entering the workforce, IC3 is often the first credential that makes a CV viable.

Productivity

IC3 certification covers computing fundamentals, key applications, and living online — the three pillars of digital literacy that apply to every workplace. Certified individuals understand how operating systems work, how to manage files and folders, how to use productivity software for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, how to communicate and collaborate online, and how to stay safe and secure on the internet.

In New Zealand, the digital skills gap continues to grow across all sectors. Employers in accountancy need staff proficient in data analytics and advanced Excel. Office support roles require CRM systems, SharePoint, Teams, and collaboration tools. Marketing teams need social media management, email campaigns, and basic content creation. Even logistics and primary industries increasingly depend on digital documentation and warehouse management systems.

IC3 certification ensures that an employee has the foundational competence to learn and use any of these tools, not just one.

Educational Outcomes

IC3 Digital Literacy is available in four versions to suit different ages and experience levels. IC3 Spark is designed for younger learners and validates basic computing skills in a single 50-minute exam. IC3 Fast Track validates digital literacy in a single streamlined exam for secondary students and adults. IC3 Global Standard 5 and Global Standard 6 offer progressively deeper coverage, with GS6 structured across three levels, and candidates who pass all three earn the IC3 Digital Literacy Master Certification.

Each IC3 exam covers at least 150 hours of instruction. For schools in New Zealand, IC3 provides a structured, internationally recognised way to measure and credential student digital literacy outcomes, aligned with the growing emphasis on digital fluency across the curriculum. For adult learners, community education programmes, and workforce development initiatives, IC3 is the accessible entry point that proves digital competence to employers. In a country where Māori, Pasifika, older adults, and those in lower socioeconomic communities are disproportionately affected by digital exclusion, IC3 certification is a practical tool for closing the digital divide.
